The Winter Olympics
Dating back to around 776 B.C., the Olympics accordingly founded by Hercules, a son of the Greek and Roman god Zeus, were created. The tradition of holding these events every four years was also created then. The history of the Olympics is so important today because of its modern day history, and because of its “sisters” events most popular sport.
First, the Olympics have an exquisite modern day history. The Olympics have sports ranging all the way from running a mile, to wrestling the top wrestlers in the world. The 2008 Olympics had 28 sports and approximately 10,500 athletes (Beijing Olympics 2008). In today’s Olympics, the winners walk away one of the most honorable medals in the world. The Big Shot winners walk away with the gold medal, the winners walk away with the silver medal, the good athletes walk away with the bronze medal, and most never even see a medal (Friends of Jade). The “sister” event, which you have probably been wondering about, is the Winter Olympics. This Olympic event was not, however, introduced until 1924, but classified as the Winter Olympics in 1926 (Beijing 2008). After all of this, it is pretty obvious that the modern day Olympics have a very interesting history.
Second, the Winter Olympics have some very popular activities that are held throughout the world. One of the most popular of the Winter Olympic sports is bobsleighing. This is the most popular event because of the intense action and speed throughout the whole event. This event was recently dominated and won by the two Canadian bobsleighing teams. They took the gold medal right out of the hands of the defending champions’ hand, Germany (Olympic.org). The country predicted to win is obviously the past winners, Canada. Since Canada is supposedly going to win, the US will have to keep practicing hard to win the champion title, adding to, the 2006 winners, Germany, lost to Canada (Olympic.org). So, these are the reasons bobsleighing is the most popular Winter Olympic event.
In conclusion, Olympic history is so important because of its impact on us today, and because of it creation of the Winter Olympics and its most popular event. The next Olympic events are occurring in London, 2012, and in Sochi, 2014.
